After discontinuing the procurement of the F-18 combat aircraft and the EA-18 Growler, the federal government announced that 15 Eurofighters would be equipped for electronic warfare. These aircraft are intended to take on a function that has so far been performed by ECR Tornadoes and which is considered a high-value resource within NATO - ECR stands for Electronic Combat and Reconnaissance. At present, however, the ECR Tornados can only reconnoiter and engage enemy air defense positions.
