Delivery of Leopard 1 A5 to Ukraine – Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands cooperate

In einer gemeinsamen Erklärung haben die Verteidigungsminister Dänemarks, Deutschlands und der Niederlande die gemeinsame Lieferung von mindestens 100 Kampfpanzern Leopard 1A5 einschließlich der erforderlichen logistischen Unterstützung und Ausbildung an die Ukraine angekündigt. Belgien habe ein erstes Interesse an einer Teilnahme bekundet.

According to the statement released by the BMVg, the Leopard 1A5 will be made available after overhaul from industrial stocks. The first should be delivered in a few months, depending on Ukraine's needs. The initiative will contribute to a substantial and sustainable strengthening of the Ukrainian armed forces and complement the ongoing efforts to support Ukraine with Leopard 2 main battle tanks.

The Federal Ministries of Defense (BMVg) and the Ministry of Economics and Climate Protection (BMWK) had previously officially announced the export license to German armaments companies for up to 178 Leopard 1 A5 main battle tanks for Ukraine. The underlying decision of the federal government had already become known on February 3 (ESuTreported). The final number of tanks to be delivered depends on the necessary repair work, writes the BMVg. The financing and repair of the tanks as well as the training of the Ukrainian armed forces is carried out in close coordination with the European partner countries of the Federal Republic of Germany.

Der Zeitplan für Lieferung und Ausbildung liegt noch nicht vor. Bei seinem Besuch gestern in Kiew kündigte Bundesverteidigungsminister Boris Pistorius die Lieferung von etwa 20 Kampfpanzern Leopard 1A5 bis Mitte des Jahres an. Weitere 40 Panzer würden noch in diesem Jahr folgen. Die Gesamtzahl von über 100 Panzern solle im ersten Quartal 2024 erreicht werden. Damit könnten, so Pistorius, drei bis vier Bataillone ausgestattet werden.
