The Egyptian Navy has taken delivery of the first of four new frigates from the German shipbuilder thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (tkMS) in Bremerhaven.As tkMS writes in a statement, three ships of the MEKO class A-200 EN are being built in Germany, the fourth is to be built at the Alexandria Shipyard in Egypt. The frigate that has now been handed over, named "Al-Aziz", was reportedly accepted by the Egyptian Navy 38 months after the start of the contract.

In addition, the second ship in the class was christened “Al-Qadeer” today by the commander of the Egyptian Navy, Vice Admiral Ashraf Ibrahim Atwa. According to the admiral, Germany and Egypt have had a long and successful history of cooperation on Class 209 submarines.

Nach Angaben von tkMS wurde der Vertrag für die vier Schiffe im September 2018 geschlossen, mit den Projektarbeiten sei im August 2019 begonnen worden. Noch im gleichen Jahr fand der Brennstart für die Al-Aziz statt. Das Schiff soll seine Reise in den Heimathafen Alexandria in ein paar Tagen antreten.
