Even though the history of the Panzerfaust 3 began long before 1992, the Bundeswehr's current standard weapon system for infantry anti-tank defense was officially handed over to the troops in autumn 1992.

On September 30, 1992, Lieutenant General Ernst Klaffus, then Head of the Army Office, ceremoniously handed over the first Panzerfaust 3 to the troops at the Infantry School in Hammelburg. The new weapon system was intended to replace the light 44 mm Panzerfaust "Lanze" and the heavy 84 mm Panzerfaust "Carl Gustaf" in the troops, which no longer met the requirements of the Bundeswehr for an anti-tank handgun.
