Für einen höheren zweistelligen Millionen-Euro-Betrag hat ein NATO-Land bei Rheinmetall 155-mm-Artillerie-Munition bestellt. Damit gebe es ein weiteres Partnerland als neues Mitglied in der Assegai-Munitions-Familie, sagte Jan-Patrick Helmsen, Geschäftsführer von Rheinmetall Denel Munition (RDM). Die Munition soll in den nächsten zwei Jahren ausgeliefert werden.

The supplier is the Rheinmetall subsidiary RDM in South Africa, which developed the Assegai product line for artillery ammunition. According to the company, the delivery includes the complete 155mm Assegai ammunition system, including fuses, various projectile types including the high-explosive combat ammunition, and the Assegai artillery propellants. The Assegai artillery family can be fired from all NATO STANAG-compatible artillery systems, including the Panzerhaubitze 2000.

Rheinmetall already set new range records in South Africa in 2019 with the Assegai family and other of its artillery products, such as the new top charge. Various systems achieved long ranges with the Assegai system approach from the fuse to the projectile to the propellant charges. A non-NATO 155mm artillery piece with 52 caliber lengths and a 25-liter propellant chamber achieved the previous record range of 76 kilometers.

RDM arbeitet den Angaben zufolge an weiteren Zukunftstechnologien für die Artillerie. So wird der Raketenantrieb der konventionellen 155mm-Assegai-Geschosse verbessert. Dazu komme eine komplette Neuentwicklung, mit der Reichweiten von über 155 Kilometern erreicht werden sollen.
