FN Herstal has brought four new types of ammunition onto the market. Two of them come in 5.56 mm x 45 caliber.

The FN PERMAX 556 EPR is an “Enhanced Performance Round”, a cartridge with improved performance. The bullet construction consists of a hardened steel penetrator and a brass jacket. Especially with regard to the urban battlefield, the projectile should offer better penetration through windshields, car bodies, glazing or masonry and then have a greater effect on the target and thus render the opponent incapable of fighting. The new ammunition also meets the future requirements with regard to “green ammunition”, i.e. low-emission ammunition.

The new FN PROPASS 556 AP is an armor piercing cartridge with a tungsten carbide core. It penetrates armored targets or protective structures of NIJ Level IV. Both new cartridges are compatible with NATO standards and can be fired from weapons designed for the 5.56 x 45 mm caliber. They have also been qualified for use from FN Herstal's FN SCAR-L and FN SCAR-SC family as well as the FN MINIMI 556.

The FN ARIA .50 RR with reduced range and the ARIA-T .50 RR-T with reduced range and tracer are intended to enable training with heavy machine guns on site shooting ranges that are only available up to caliber 7.62 x 51 are designed.

The maximum firing range of the new ARIA cartridges is 3,500 meters. Another advantage is that the cartridges from .50 caliber weapons can be used without having to re-fire them into the RR loads. For machine guns there is belted ammunition, in which four RRs are followed by one RR-T. Both the FN ARIA .50 RR and FN ARIA-T .50 RR-T are compatible with all .50BMG weapons and are qualified for FN Herstal's own FN M2 HB-QCB and FN M3M heavy machine guns.
