With the cutting of the first armor plate in front of a high-level audience, the GDELS-Santa Bárbara Sistemas plant in Trubia (Asturias) has started serial production of the 8×8 wheeled armored vehicle Dragón for the Spanish army, GDELS has announced. General Dynamics European Landsystems (GDELS) is part of the TESS Defense consortium, which also includes the companies Indra Sistemas, Escribano Mechanical & Engineering and Sapa Placencia. TESS was commissioned in 2020 to produce 348 Dragon for 1.7 billion euros (ESuTreported).

Derived from the highly protected GDELS Piranha V, the 8×8 Dragón offers a spacious crew compartment and significant payload capacity. Technical features include all-wheel steering and hydropneumatic suspension. Indra supplies the electronics and software, Saga the drive and Escribano the turret.

Depending on the equipment, the vehicle weighs over 33 tons. With a length of 8.00 m, a width of 2.99 m and a height of 2.34 m, up to eight soldiers can be transported in the protected cabin, plus the three-man permanent crew.

Im ersten Los werden 348 Piranha 5 in 13 verschiedenen Konfigurationen beschafft, einschließlich der jeweiligen Komponenten von Missionssystemen (Bewaffnung, Schutzelemente, Sensoren, Kommunikations- und Führungssysteme) sowie Produkte für die logistische Unterstützung. Die ersten Fahrzeuge sollen bereits 2022 an die Truppe ausgeliefert werden.

Das Dragón-Programm ist auf insgesamt 1.000 Fahrzeuge ausgelegt. Nach dem ersten Los mit 348 sollen ein zweites Los mit 365 und ein drittes Los mit 287 Fahrzeugen folgen. Während das zweite Los in absehbarer Zeit bestellt werden soll, ist das dritte Los noch nicht terminiert.
