The Federal Cartel Office announced on November 9th that the companies Rafael Advanced Defense Systems (Israel), Krauss-Maffei Wegmann KMW (Germany) and General Dynamics European Land Systems GDELS (Spain) had registered the establishment of the Euro Trophy joint venture based in Munich . The Federal Cartel Office then opened merger control proceedings, which usually last a few weeks.
The purpose of the incorporation is the sale and marketing of the Active Protection System (APS) Trophy. Rafael is the maker of the Trophy system. KMW and GDELS are system companies that can integrate Trophy into battle tanks.
In Europe, Germany has ordered APS Trophy for 17 Leopard 2 main battle tanks, which will be integrated by KMW. The UK is currently studying the integration of APS Trophy as part of the Challenger 3 modernization project being carried out by Rheinmetall subsidiary RBSL. GDELS' involvement in the new company suggests that Spain is also interested in Trophy. GDELS is the producer of the 219 Leopard 2E of the Spanish Army. Portugal also expressed interest in an APS for its 37 Leopard 2A6s (from Dutch stocks) in March 2021.
