The testing of a high-energy laser weapon on the frigate Sachsen ended on April 24 with a demonstration of the results achieved in front of high-ranking representatives of the Federal Ministry of Defense, the Federal Office for Equipment, Information Technology and Use of the Federal Armed Forces (BAAINBw) and the Navy. This emerges from a Twitter message from BAAINBw.

At the end of June 2022, the BAAINBw, together with specialists from the military technical offices 71 and 91, scaffolded a container with the laser weapon system from Rheinmetall and MBDA on the Sachsen. This was followed by a test program in which proof was provided in October 2022 that dynamic targets can be successfully combated under realistic conditions (ESUT reported).

The BAAINBw has not announced how the laser weapon will continue. Sufficient material should now be available for the development of the document Capability Gap and Functional Requirement (FFF) as a prerequisite for a selection decision by the Inspector General (AWE). However, as far as is known, a laser weapon system is not included in the Bundeswehr plan.
