Along with firepower and mobility, protection is one of the three main criteria that determine the design of main battle tanks. Cheap anti-tank handguns and the increasing number of long-range anti-tank guided missiles - both with shaped-charge warheads - have recently given the development a significant impetus.

HConventional armor with a composite of materials of different properties and configurations are becoming too heavy and bulky to provide adequate protection against shaped charges.
