Diehl and the Israeli group Rafael are intensifying their cooperation and supplementing the current SPICE 250 production at Diehl Defense with the new, powered air-to-ground guided missile SPICE 250 ER. SPICE stands for Smart Precise Impact and Cost-Effective Guidance Kit. The missiles are named for their weight of 250 lb (113 kg). The weight of the warhead is given as 75 kg.

Rafael writes that SPICE 250 is the smallest system in the SPICE family, which includes the SPICE 250, SPICE 1000 and SPICE 2000 models. After initial inertial control, the missiles are controlled via terrain images generated with artificial intelligence. The control is thus independent of the interfering GPS. According to the manufacturer, the system achieves a high level of accuracy (CEP less than three meters) and therefore minimizes collateral damage.

According to Rafael, SPICE 250 ER has the same characteristics as SPICE 250 and is equipped with a small turbo engine that increases the range to at least 150 km. The extended range is achieved without changing the mission planning system, aircraft interfaces and crew operation. This would combine the advantages of both variants (sliding and driven) while significantly reducing the integration effort.

The network-enabled digital data connection enables a human-in-the-loop capability, abort mission commands and the use of BDI software agents for artificial intelligence. BDI stands for Belief, Desire and Intensions.
