The Bundeswehr is currently receiving the Leopard 2 A7V battle tank, the most powerful version since the battle tank was introduced in 1979 – 43 years ago. The army also has the A5, A6 and A6M versions in stock and will receive Leopard A7A1 main battle tanks with the Trophy active protection system from 2024.

After the development of the Leopard 2 main battle tank began in 1970, series production started in 1977. Since its introduction, the Leopard 2 main battle tank has been continuously developed in line with changing threats and operational doctrines using new technologies. The Leopard 2 should be used at least until 2040 with the currently introduced combat value increases for the versions in the A7 standard and the plan for the AX (working name). Then, after more than 60 years of service to the Leopard 2, the possible successor system Main Ground Combat System (MGCS) will be introduced.
