Die Türkei modernisiert einen Teil ihrer 354 Kampfpanzer Leopard 2 A4, die sie zwischen 2008 und 2013 aus Beständen der Bundeswehr erworben hatte. Die Als Leopard 2 A4 T1 bezeichneten Panzer erhalten neben Verbesserungen in Führungs- und Feuerleitmitteln einen erhöhten Schutz gegen die Gefährdung in aktuellen Kampfumgebungen.

After the first modernized main battle tanks were publicly presented in February 2021, the head of the Turkish Presidium for Defense Industry (SSB), Ismail Demir, announced via Twitter that Aselsan had started mass production of kits for increased armor protection.

The new protection package was developed in the recently commissioned Roketsan Ballistic Protection Center. Building on the existing ballistic protection of the Leopard 2 A4, protection is enhanced with add-on turret and hull modules, supplemental roof protection, heavy chain skirts and cage armor. The crew is better protected against the effects of ordnance with liners in the hull and tower, as well as mine-friendly seats and the arrangement of the equipment. A halon-free fire suppression and extinguishing system also contributes to this.

Wegen der Haltung der Bundesregierung nach dem Verkauf der Kampfpanzer hat die Türkei nach einem Weg gesucht, die Zahl der Panzer zu steigern. Daraufhin wurde der Kampfpanzer Altay entwickelt, dessen Einführung noch auf sich warten lässt.
