NATO forces are currently in a challenging situation of transformation and adaptation to the new realities of the European security situation. In Germany in particular, the armed forces and thus also the medical service have been geared towards international missions and crisis operations in terms of both material and personnel over the past 20 years. The new European situation shows that previous requirement profiles for alliance and national defense have now become more important.
However, the need for military psychiatry has already been proven by the missions in the former Yugoslavia, in Afghanistan and in Mali, as these missions were already associated with higher risks and deployment-related psychological disorders depending on the situation
