Interview with Dr. Germar Schröder, partner at Strategy& Deutschland and retired Lieutenant General Peter Bohrer, senior management consultant on the NATO in Transition study

ES & T:What prompted you to create this strategy paper?
Schröder:The reason for this paper was the Berlin Security Conference, which, due to the threat situation in the east, essentially deals with effective deterrence on the eastern flank. We are proud that we were able to contribute in advance of the Chiefs of Defense (ChoD) panel. In our view, one of the most complex issues for NATO is the issue of enablement, i.e. the ability to deploy to the conflict border in a timely manner and maintain operational and combat readiness, as the core of any effective deterrence - and that according to the “show don 't tell." The scale of these tasks has now changed drastically compared to the Cold War period. We are now talking about an eastern flank that is more than twice as long. We are talking about logistics distances of more than 1,000 kilometers, as well as 10 to 30 days of notice to effect for up to 300,000 soldiers as part of the regional
