A new vertical launch system (VLS) for launching anti-aircraft missiles has been installed on the frigate Sachsen, as the BAAINBw has announced. The complex work was carried out in the naval arsenal during the frigate's scheduled berth.

The installation of a new VLS became necessary because the system integrated into the construction of the frigate was irreparably damaged in an ammunition accident in June 2018. At that time, a missile got stuck in the VLS when it was launched and burned down (hangfire).

Replacing the VLS is a particular challenge, writes the Federal Office for Equipment, Information Technology and Use of the Bundeswehr. VLS would usually only be integrated when a new ship is being built. The manufacturer Lockheed Martin produced the VLS system from scratch. Therefore, we were able to obtain a more current version of the launcher. The procurement was carried out as a government purchase through the Foreign Military Sales process.

After the last module was installed last week, the VLS was integrated into the frigate's weapon system via software. Final functional tests should take place at the end of ongoing maintenance next year.

According to the BMVg, the new VLS Mk41 launcher with 32 bays enables the frigate F124 Sachsen to fire guided missiles of the Standard Missile 2 (SM-2) and Evolved Sea Sparrow Missile (ESSM). One bay holds four ESSM or one SM-2.

The F124 is designed as a multi-purpose ship for escort and maritime control. Their focus is air defense: all sensors and weapons on board are optimized for this main task of air defense.
