The Federal Office for Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw) announced on Twitter that the NATO Support and Procurement Agency NSPA, on behalf of the BAAINBw, has agreed with the Italian defense company Leonardo to supply a third mobile radar device of the type RAT 31 DL/M . The Air Force has been operating two radars of the same type under the name VERALÜ (deployable air surveillance radar) for more than a decade.

The Avvistamento Terrestre radar (RAT, ground-based reconnaissance radar) was developed by Selex Sistemi Integrati, which was later acquired by Leonardo. It is an active phased array 3D radar in the L-band (1 – 2 GHz). According to the Bundeswehr's description, the device offers a detection range of up to 400 km and covers airspace up to an altitude of around 33 km. In azimuth, the antenna rotates at six revolutions per minute. The elevation is achieved by electronic beam control. The maximum transmission power is 46 kW.

The devices can replace permanently installed radars in compensation mode, for example during maintenance periods. That was the main task at the beginning. According to the Bundeswehr, since 2015 the radar devices have been used as the “eyes” of the tactical command posts (CRC, Control and Reporting Center) of the air force during exercises and operations. This included, among other things, the deployment in the Baltics and Iraq (Counter Desh) as well as the consolidation of the radar image during the G7 summit in Elmau.
