More submarines for Norway? Chief of Staff speaks out for six U212CD
Hans Uwe Mergener
Norway has ordered four U212CD submarines from Germany, but Chief of Staff General Eirik Kristoffersen considers this to be insufficient. He sees anti-submarine capability as a priority and wants to increase the number of submarines from four to six.
This is one of the recommendations in his military advice presented in May and published on June 7, 2023. In November 2022, the government asked the chief of staff for his recommendation on how the armed forces should look in the future. "A larger number of submarines will double operational readiness," writes the Norwegian armed forces chief in his report. If these ideas were to be realized, it would not only be advantageous for Norwegian-German armaments cooperation from a military point of view. Industrially, too, it would be a positive signal.
