The Security Policy Commission of the Swiss National Council has decided by a large majority to comply with the army's request for the decommissioning of 25 Panzer 87 (Leopard 2) tanks, as the commission announced on March 28. The Commission has made a possible sale conditional on the German company Rheinmetall being the only ones to purchase the tanks.

The trigger for the process was a letter from the German federal government dated February 23 to the Swiss Defense Minister Viola Amherd with the request to enable the buyback of Leopard tanks (ESuTreported). The Federal Council had commented positively on the application.

In the next step, the chambers of parliament have to sort out the 25 Panzer 87s. Then a sale to Rheinmetall is possible.
