Die Ausbildung der ukrainischen Panzerbesatzungen am Kampfpanzer Leopard 2 hat begonnen. In Deutschland findet die Ausbildung in der Panzertruppenschule in Munster am Leopard 2 A6 statt, wo schon seit Wochen die Besatzungen für die Schützenpanzer Marder ausgebildet werden. Das ukrainische Personal kommt überwiegend direkt aus dem Einsatz an der Front.

In Poland, training takes place at a military base and test site in Swietoszow, in the south-west of the country. Under the leadership of the 10th Brygada Kawalerii, instructors from Poland, Canada and Norway train the Ukrainian tankers in the operation of the Leopard 2 A4. The participants who fought in units in eastern Ukraine are trained up to ten hours a day, including on weekends. The one-month training takes place partly on simulators and partly on the battle tanks.

During a visit to the training facility on February 13, Poland's Prime Minister Andrzej Duda thanked Germany for allowing the German-made tanks to be made available to Ukraine and for providing its own tanks. The training is part of the European Union's military aid to Ukraine.

Mehrere NATO-Länder haben die Bereitstellung von Kampfpanzern Leopard 2 in den Versionen A6 und A4 angekündigt. Bisher liegen feste Zusagen für 43 Leoparden vor (A6: Deutschland 14, Portugal 3; A4: Polen 14, Kanada 4, Norwegen 8). Nach einer Aussage von Verteidigungsminister Boris Pistorius in der vergangenen Woche soll die Ausrüstung für das erste von zwei geplanten Panzerbataillonen im April in der Ukraine verfügbar sein. Am Rande der Tagung der Ukraine Defense Contact Group in Brüssel erklärte Pistorius gestern, Probleme könnten sich aus dem Zustand einiger polnischer Kampfpanzer sowie aus dem Mangel an Munition und Ersatzteilen ergeben.
