The NATO Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA) has completed the demilitarization, dismantling and disposal of 722 Italian Army M113 armored personnel carriers. According to the NSPA, the project has brought net revenues of over €3 million to Italy and has helped save 41,000 tons of CO2.

After demilitarization and disposal of the hazardous materials, the remaining materials were separated and sorted, the NSPA describes the process. This allowed the recovered ferrous and non-ferrous metals, which made up 90 percent of the vehicles, to be recycled without sacrificing quality. In addition to contributing to the circular economy and climate protection, the sale of over eight million kilos of recovered scrap on the global scrap market has brought Italy net proceeds of three million euros.

As the NSPA writes, the agency has developed extensive Demilitarization, Disarmament and Disposal (D3) expertise and can support NATO countries in reducing the military carbon footprint by saving primary resources, energy and CO2 and reducing dependence on raw materials and fossil fuels reduced. NSPA provides tailored D3 expertise, strategic planning and execution through a global contractor framework accessible to all NSPA clients. This support is also available to other NATO countries and partners.
