To strengthen its territorial structures, the Bundeswehr is setting up another homeland security regiment in Lower Saxony. The Ministry of Defense announced yesterday that the location of this sixth homeland security regiment will be Nienburg.

The establishment of five homeland security regiments in Berlin, Bavaria, Hesse, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and North Rhine-Westphalia as well as a central homeland security training base in the years 2022 to 2025 was decided last year, as the statement continues.

The Russian aggression in Ukraine illustrates the need for consistent further development of homeland security and the strengthening of territorial structures, it is said. The experiences from the last major exercises by Allied forces, findings from the Ukraine war and the evaluation of current NATO planning have led to a reassessment of the north and northwest German area. There is an additional need for homeland security forces in Lower Saxony in order to be able to secure the reception of military forces, especially from overseas, and possible training, exercise and staging areas in the context of the performance of military tasks.

In addition, the formation roll call for the new Territorial Command of the Bundeswehr took place yesterday, which is due to start work in October and to which the homeland security regiments are subordinate. At the head of the command is theNational Territorial Commanders. Until now, this function was carried out by the Inspector of the Armed Forces Base. The new territorial commander will be Lieutenant General Carsten Breuer, who headed the Corona crisis team in the Chancellery.

The command should take over the management of all Bundeswehr activities in homeland security and be able to operate around the clock. It will report directly to the Ministry of Defense.
