Im Februar 2021 haben die Firmen Rheinmetall Denel Munition, das südafrikanische Tochterunternehmen von Rheinmetall, und Northrop Grumman eine strategische Partnerschaft im Bereich der reichweitengesteigerten und präzisionsgelenkten Artilleriemunition geschlossen. Die Partnerschaft ist auf zehn Jahre ausgelegt und soll Lösungen für NATO-Staaten als auch für nicht der Vereinbarung des Joint Ballistics Memorandum of Understanding (JBMOU) von 2009 beigetretene Staaten verfügbar machen.

By combining Rheinmetall's V-LAP (Velocity-Enhanced Artillery Projectile) projectile technology with a range of up to 76 km and the GPS-based precision technology of the M1156 Precision Guidance Kit (PGK) from Northrop Grumman, it is intended to create promising ammunition technology in the 155 mm artillery ammunition to offer.

The high accuracy of this technology of a few meters and the increased range compared to conventional ammunition thus meets the requirements for ammunition for future artillery missions. A precise point of impact at a great distance, without endangering your own strength on the ground and collateral damage, can thus be achieved.

Vergleichbare Ansätze hochpräziser Artilleriemunition bieten am Markt auch die Lösungen von Raytheon/BAE mit dem GPS- und Laser- bzw. Trägheits-gesteuerten Produkt Excalibur sowie Diehl/Leonardo mit der GPS- und Laser-/Infrarot-gesteuerten Unterkalibermunition Vulcano.
