3M announced today that it has sold its US ballistic protection business (3M Ceradyne) to Avon Rubber plc for approximately $91 million, subject to closing and other adjustments. An additional contingent consideration of up to $25 million is payable subject to the outcome of outstanding tenders. Avon Rubber is a provider of advanced chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear respiratory protection systems to military, law enforcement and firefighting customers.

The sale relates to the development and production of ballistic helmets, insert plates and aircraft armor. Everything was made in the USA and subject to theITAR Guidelines.

The Germany-based branch 3M Technical Ceramics with the raw stop production (B4C) in Kempten remains part of 3M. According to a 3M spokesman, the supply of partner companies with raw materials, ceramic plates for ballistic protective vests or vehicle/aircraft protection in Germany, which also supply products to the Bundeswehr, should remain unaffected.
