At the end of 2020, one export country – Kuwait – will receive the first Eurofighter with AESA radar technology before the consortium countries. This fulfills an essential condition of the purchase agreement with this nation.

As soon as the order was placed and the first Eurofighter was delivered, it was clear that for cost reasons, as in many other areas of this weapon system, a compromise would have to be made with the most important sensor, the radar. There is no doubt that the CAPTOR-M pulse-Doppler radar with mechanical beam oscillation currently in use is one of the most powerful and reliable radar systems on board a multi-role combat aircraft. With regard to future requirements in almost all radar parameters, but especially in protection against electronic warfare measures, the technological innovation possibilities have largely been exhausted. The replacement by the CAPTOR-E radar, which is equipped with electronic beam swiveling, is within reach with the start of production of the antenna by HENSOLDT, the new electronic eye. The first devices are scheduled to be delivered in a few months in 2019. The most important component, the antenna, had previously passed acceptance tests on the ground and in the air and met the performance requirements.
