The Polish procurement authority has concluded a delivery order with the Swedish defense company Saab for a large number of Carl-Gustaf M4 anti-tank weapons with an order volume of 12.9 billion Swedish crowns (equivalent to around 1.1 billion euros). The contract is scheduled to come into force this six months as soon as “certain external conditions are met,” Saab said.

In addition to the weapon system, ammunition and training equipment are also to be delivered. According to information from the Polish Ministry of Defense, several thousand weapon systems and several hundred thousand rounds of ammunition will be procured. Press reports put the number of weapon systems at 6,000. According to the ministry, the weapons are equipped with the modern fire control system FCD 558 (Fire Control Device), which enables the firing of programmable ammunition.

Saab's Carl Gustaf system is a multi-purpose man-portable weapon system with a wide range of ammunition types, making it suitable for a variety of tasks.

According to Saab, warheads with various shaped charge configurations, fragments and flechettes are available for the cartridge-carrying Carl Gustaf ammunition for fighting tanks, bunkers, buildings and soft targets. The combat distances are between 100 and 1,000 meters. Grenades for battlefield lighting and smoke/fire are also available and can be used up to 2,100 meters or 1,300 meters.

The Carl-Gustaf M4 are scheduled to be delivered to Poland starting this year until 2027.

The order from Poland joins numerous orders for the weapon system from all over the world. In the last few months alone, orders have been received from the USA, Japan, Australia, Sweden, Lithuania and several unnamed countries and from the NATO Support and Procurement Agency NSPA. Saab has also started building a factory in India to meet local needs.
