In the Polish Miecznik project for the procurement of three frigates, the designs by thyssenKrupp Marine Systems (tkMS) and Babcock International were selected by the Polish Ministry of Defense for contract negotiations after the study phase had been completed. This was confirmed by a spokesman for tkMS. About the start of the study phase, ESuTreported.
tkMS hatte sich mit einem dem polnischen Bedarf angepassten Entwurf der Mehrzweckfregatte Baureihe MEKO-A300 an der Konzeptentwurfsstudie beteiligt. Babcock ging mit der Arrowhead 140 ins Rennen. Der spanische Schiffbauer Navantia nimmt am weiteren Verfahren nicht mehr teil.
Poland has formed a consortium led by Holding Polska Grupa Zbrojeniowa (PGZ) for the Miecznik project to build the frigate. This consortium with two shipyards provides the shipbuilding capacities. The technology should be provided by the selected foreign company. After the selection, negotiations between the consortium and the two providers tkMS and Babcock are now beginning. The draft is fine-tuned according to the military requirements, the modalities for the technology transfer are determined and, last but not least, the financing of the project is negotiated.
Zu Beginn der Studienphase hatte tkMS erklärt, der Bau von Kriegsschiffen in Zusammenarbeit mit der Industrie anderer Länder sei eine Selbstverständlichkeit. Über die Hälfte der exportierten Schiffe seien von Werften im Land des jeweiligen Kunden gebaut worden.
Polen will zunächst ab 2023 nur eine Fregatte bauen. Nach der Inbetriebnahme 2028 soll das Konzept in der Realisierung geprüft werden. Die Prüfergebnisse sollen in den Bau der zweiten und dritten Fregatte einfließen. Das gesamte Miecznik-Projekt soll bis 2034 abgeschlossen sein. Nach einer Mitteilung von PGZ liegt der Vertragswert für die drei Fregatten einschließlich Bewaffnung und einem logistischen Paket bei 1,8 Milliarden Euro.
