E-7A Wedgetail – Successor to the NATO E-3 AWACS aircraft
Sidney E. Dean
On November 15, 2023, NATO announced the decision to replace the current E-3A AWACS fleet with E-7A AEW&C aircraft. According to this report, the procurement was approved by an Allied consortium during the first half of the month. The new aircraft type is expected to take over the alliance's airborne early warning and operational control mission from 2031.
The E-7A Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) aircraft was based on the civilian Boeing 737-700ER airliner. Australia was the first country to decide to introduce the new type; This is also where the nickname “Wedgetail” came from, after the Australian wedge-tailed eagle. The operational readiness of the E-7A with the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) was established in 2012 (Initial Operating Capability - IOC).
