The Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu calls for the permanent stationing of German troops in his country. At a joint press conference with Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Tuesday, Ciolacu said: "I think that German troops must be constantly stationed on Romanian territory. I hope that together with the Chancellor we can take decisions in this regard as soon as possible.”

This surprise move by the Romanian prime minister comes just days after Defense Minister Boris Pistorius pledged that Germany was prepared, under certain conditions, to station a combat brigade in Lithuania (ES&T reported).

NATO member Romania sits on the alliance's eastern flank, bordering directly on Ukraine, Moldova and the Black Sea.
