Current images from the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) show the highly protected troop transport Eitan in action, presumably in the Gaza Strip. It was only in May that the Ministry of Defense handed over the first eight Eitan from series production to the troops.

Based on the experiences from the Gaza conflict in 2014, Israel began developing a new armored transport vehicle. Capability gaps had become apparent when using the 60-ton tracked transport vehicle, Namer. Now the vehicle range is being supplemented with a lighter vehicle. The survivability of the crew, achieved through high protection, mobility and weaponry, was the focus of development.

The result is an 8×8 wheeled vehicle in the 40-ton class with high protection against mines and shelling and active protection using the Iron Fist system. The high level of mine protection (level 5b according to STANAG 4569 is assumed) is achieved, among other things, by a V-shaped underbody and a double floor. The basic protection provided by the armored steel of the vehicle hull is supplemented by composite armor. It is powered by a 550 kW turbo diesel from MTU, which can accelerate the vehicle to speeds of up to 90 km/h. The eight driven wheels on hydropneumatically suspended axles have tire pressure control and run-flat properties. In addition to the commander, driver and gunner, the cabin can accommodate up to nine infantrymen. A remote-controlled weapon station with a 12.7mm machine gun is installed as armament. Electro-optical observation equipment and thermal imaging devices enable reconnaissance and fire fighting day and night via the digital fire control system. Particular emphasis was placed on networking, with which the situation report can be constantly exchanged with higher levels and neighbors.

The vehicle's modular design allows it to be configured as an infantry fighting vehicle. The Eitan also receives a Samson turret, which can be equipped with a rapid-fire cannon and a starter for anti-tank missiles as well as a machine gun.
