While individual shipyard groups dominate national naval shipbuilding in the large European countries, there are numerous players on the market in Germany. These are also organized privately and therefore, unlike Naval Group in France or Fincantieri in Italy, have to do without the protective hand and financial support of the state.

However, a significant change is likely to occur in the local industry landscape. The industry leader thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (tkMS) is to be spun off from the thyssenkrupp group and become independent, as tkMS CEO Oliver Burkhard recently confirmed again at the DWT marine workshop in Linstow. Various options for becoming self-employed are being examined. “We want to take our fate into our own hands,” said Burkhard. In a dual role, the manager is also a board member of the thyssenkrupp Group, which, as owner, is driving forward the spin-off. The parent company is exploring how the potential for tkMS can best be realized for the company and its customers. According to him, there are also considerations for state entry.
