The Lürssen shipyard group in Bremen is now continuing naval shipbuilding under the new umbrella brand Naval Vessels Lürssen (NVL). As independent companies, all Defense locations and thus all shipbuilding competencies of the Defense division would be combined in the new NVL Group, Lürssen announced today.

The independent company NVL was spun off from Fr. Lürssen Werft as the future holding company of the NVL Group. According to the information, the NVL Group is responsible for the entire range of new construction and all repair activities for naval ships and coast guard boats. New builds and refits in the yacht division will continue unchanged under the Lürssen brand with Fr. Lürssen Werft as the parent company.

“With the Yachts and Defense divisions, we serve very different and increasingly heterogeneous markets and target groups. In addition, the complexity in civil and military shipbuilding is growing,” explains Friedrich Lürßen, shareholder of the Lürssen Group. In order to optimally exploit the skills as a shipbuilder and the infrastructure at their own shipyard locations, the decision was made to clearly separate the two divisions, Lürßen continues.

According to his cousin and partner Peter Lürßen, the split into two business areas should strengthen national and international competitiveness and position the group of companies for the challenges of the future.

Die Dachgesellschaft der NVL Group mit Sitz in Bremen-Vegesack wird gemeinsam durch Klaus Borgschulte und Tim Wagner als Sprecher sowie Dirk Malgowski und Lena Ströbele geschäftsführend geleitet. Zur NVL Group gehören die Neubaustandorte Peene-Werft in Wolgast und Blohm+Voss in Hamburg, die Service-Aktivitäten der Lürssen Logistics, die beiden Reparaturwerften Neue Jadewerft in Wilhelmshaven und Norderwerft in Hamburg sowie Standorte in Australien, Bulgarien und Brunei.

The shipyards of the NVL Group are to cover the entire new construction and repair portfolio for naval vessels and coast guard boats for the national and international market. "All current projects for the German Navy and for our international customers will continue to run under the new umbrella brand," explains Tim Wagner. "As a privately run shipyard group, we are and will remain independent and therefore very flexible."

Under the Lürssen brand, the entire new construction portfolio of the yacht division will be continued unchanged by the Bremer Fr. Lürssen shipyard together with the Lürssen-Kröger shipyard in Schacht-Audorf. All activities for the area of yacht refits and services at the Bremen and Hamburg locations are also managed by the yacht division. Fr. Lürssen Werft, the umbrella company for the yacht division, is managed by Peter Lürßen as chairman, Justus Reinke, Lena Ströbele, Sebastian Rheineck and York Ilgner. According to the announcement, both divisions with all associated companies will remain part of the Lürssen Group, which will continue to be family-run.

On the other hand, Lürssen apparently wants to withdraw from the unprofitable business with the maintenance and repair of ships at the Blohm + Voss shipyard in Hamburg, which he acquired a few years ago. According to media reports, Peter Lürßen announced yesterday that he intends to discontinue this area. At the same time, the number of employees is to be reduced. There is speculation in the media that up to a fifth of the approximately 600 jobs at Blohm + Voss could be affected.
