In the target image of the German Navy from March, anti-aircraft ships capable of defending against ballistic and hypersonic missiles are envisaged from the mid-2030s. Six F127 frigates are planned – one more than in older plans (Marine 2031). As units specialized in anti-air warfare (AAW), they form the core of high-seas combat groups for NATO's northern flank and worldwide deployment, along with six ASW (anti-submarine warfare) units, which the target image refers to as the F126 frigates. Translated, this means that the Bundeswehr provides for the permanent operational readiness of one of these ships in two task forces.
They are thus an expression of a stronger German commitment to NATO's strategic security precautions.
