The Federal Office for Equipment, Information Technology and Use of the German Armed Forces (BAAINBw) has selected Saab's "Arexis" sensor system as the solution for the German EK Eurofighter, as the company writes in a press release. EK stands for Electronic Combat. At this point in time, however, Saab has not yet signed a contract and has not received a corresponding order.

Last year, the Ministry of Defense announced its intention to enable 15 Luftwaffe Eurofighters for EK missions. It is primarily about the equipment for the SEAD role (Suppression of Enemy Air Defence).

According to the announcement, the selection of the Arexis sensors is based on a current market study by the BAAINBw. This study evaluated the systems of European and international EK providers according to numerous criteria such as system performance, integration effort and legal aviation law.

“We welcome this decision and look forward to the next steps. The Arexis system offered is the optimal solution for the EK requirements of the German Eurofighter,” Anders Sjöberg, CEO of Saab Deutschland GmbH, is quoted in the press release. Saab will provide a large part of the services in this project at its location in Bavaria together with the AI partner Helsing.

According to Helsing, the Eurofighter should be capable of electronic combat by 2028. Saab's Arexis sensor suite is enabled by Helsing's AI-based software for cognitive EK. The focus is therefore on reconnaissance and self-protection against enemy air defense. According to the company, the German Bundestag will deal with the decision this year.

Helsing's AI solution makes it possible to analyze recorded radar data while still in the aircraft and to determine precise self-protection measures within milliseconds.
