First wounded transport container delivered

The Bundeswehr has taken over the first of 13 protected wounded transport containers (GVTC) from the manufacturer Airbus Defense and Space (ADS). As the company has announced, this first GVTC serves as a proof sample. This means that the Bundeswehr will put the container through its paces and train its medical staff on it.

After the positive outcome of the proof of performance and the operational test, the integrated verification is completed with the declaration of willingness to be taken over by the future user/operator. The GVTC then goes into series production. The twelve series GVTC are then to be handed over to the German Armed Forces between 2024 and 2026.

Wie ADS schreibt, wurde der GVTC unter anderem mit den Partnerunternehmen Drehtainer GmbH und Binz Automotive entwickelt. Drehtainer liefert den Container mit integrierter Schutzausrüstung auf dem geforderten Level. Binz liefert die medizinischen Geräte und Ausrüstungsgegenstände für die Unterbringung und die (intensiv-)medizinische Betreuung der Verwundeten.

Der GVTC basiert ADS zufolge auf dem internationalen ISO-Standard-20-Fuß-Container und wiegt nach früheren Angaben ca. 13,5 Tonnen. Mit rund sechs Metern Länge lasse er sich über ein integriertes Hakenabrollsystem problemlos auf vorhandene Bundeswehr-Lkw aufsetzen. Kräne oder andere Sondervorrichtungen werden nicht benötigt.

In the GVTC, two paramedics can treat up to eight patients and, for example, monitor their vital signs and oxygen saturation, carry out defibrillations or have patients ventilated using the integrated oxygen generation system. Its occupants and the equipment on board are also protected in the container from chemical warfare agents, bullets and heavy explosions, ADS continues. A power generator enables self-sufficient operation for hours. The high-performance air conditioning system allows the GVTC to be used even under extreme climatic conditions.

In June 2021, the BAAINBw had agreed the delivery of the GVTC at a unit price of around three million euros in the period from 2024 to 2026 (ESuTreported).
