On December 16, 2022, the government of Prime Minister Fumio Kishida adopted the updated version of Japan's National Security Strategy (NSS) and the two framework documents National Defense Strategy (NDS) and Defense Expansion Program (DBP). This happened not only under the impression of the Russian attack on Ukraine, but also against the background of increasing tensions in East Asia. These documents show that Japan has itssignificantly improve defense capability.
On the geostrategic starting point: The Japanese archipelago with its four main islands stretches in an arc in a north-south stretch of almost 3,000 km off the east coast of Asia. Political scientist Frank Kostelnik assesses that Japan's island location, which is favorable for defense, "is comparable to that of Great Britain in relation to the European continent. Japan represents both a stepping stone and a barrier to the mainland.” However, the country is locked in territorial disputes with neighboring major powers.
