In the past few months, the Ministry of Defense and the Bundeswehr Procurement Office have made important decisions regarding the air defense project Nah- und Nächstbereichsschutz (NNbS), which is intended to protect mobile army units in particular from threats from the air. One of them regulates the division of tasks between the Air Force and the Army in ground-based air defense.
The former Inspector General of the Bundeswehr, Eberhard Zorn, approved a reassignment of the areas of responsibility to the two branches of the armed forces, as confirmed by a spokesman for the Air Force. Accordingly, the army will again have its own air defense capabilities in the future, which should amount to the reintroduction of army air defense.
