The Swedish Armed Forces received the fourth and final battery of Patriot air defense systems. Four years after the order, the four batteries were delivered within a year, said the Swedish procurement authority FMV. “The original plan was that we would hand over the last fire unit to the Swedish Armed Forces next year. But due to the changed global situation, we shifted up a gear and were able to deliver them already this year,” said Christer Mellgren, project manager at FMV.

The Swedes call the system Luftvärnsystem 103 (Air Defense System 103). The FMV describes it as a modern air defense system capable of fighting high-speed ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and aircraft.

The four fire units that FMV has now delivered each include a command center, a reconnaissance and fire control radar, a power supply and sanitary facilities. The equipment also includes the vehicles that transport the various components, as well as the two types of missiles that the system can fire.

Since the Patriot system is completely new to the Swedish armed forces, a team of experts from the US government and industry trained operators and repairers on site over the past year, writes the FMV. The support will be continued in the coming year with reduced staffing.

After the final delivery of replacement devices, FMV wants to end the procurement project and move on to the operational phase.

In Europe, Patriot is deployed in eight NATO countries, including Germany, in addition to Sweden. In addition, six countries in the Middle East and three in Asia use the system. Switzerland will soon receive Patriot. A few days ago, the USA announced that Ukraine would be equipped with Patriot (ESuTreported).
