M.With the possible threat of missile attacks from Russia, missile defense has become an even more pressing issue in Europe and Germany.

This raises the question of what threats exist and what defense options are available.

European countries have always been within range of Intermediate-Range Ballistic Missiles (IRBMs). This threat has diminished between 1987 and 2018, as long as the US and Russia used the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) treaty. However, after both countries pulled out of that treaty in 2018, the continent has once again faced such a threat.

One of the weapon systems aimed at Europe is the Russian SS-26"Stone", also known as"Iskander". Deployed on an 8×8 mobile transport, Iskander can fire two 9M723K1 ballistic missiles in minutes at targets over 400 km away. Such a rocket, launched from the Kaliningrad enclave, can reach Warsaw, Riga and Vilnius, but just not German territory. However, the same platform, armed with the Kalibr cruise missile, can hit targets across Europe. The development of the 9M729 variant was one of the reasons for Washington's exit from the INF Treaty.
