The propulsion diesel engines for the German Navy's future F126 frigates will be supplied by MAN Energy Solutions. As the Dutch company DAMEN Naval announced at the Hamburg shipping fair SMM 2022, the company has signed a contract with MAN Energy Solutions for the delivery of eight MAN 32/44CR propulsion engines.

In June 2020, the Bundeswehr procurement office BAAINBw awarded the construction contract for the four ships to the Dutch shipbuilder DAMEN as general contractor. DAMEN Naval will deliver the frigates to the German Navy together with subcontractors Blohm+Voss and Thales. The first ship is to be handed over in Hamburg in 2028.

Each vessel will be fitted with two MAN 32/44CR engines, with each engine featuring MAN's proprietary Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system to meet International Maritime Organization (IMO) Tier III regulations. In addition, the engines will be fitted with a high-displacement, soft-spring suspension system to meet the latest regulations on shock and noise. MAN Energy Solutions will also deliver their latest development in engine control, which is state-of-the-art in terms of cyber security.

The 32/44CR engines will be part of a combined diesel-electric-diesel propulsion system (CODLAD) that will allow the F126-class frigates to achieve a top speed in excess of 26 knots. The first engines will be delivered to the shipyard in early 2024.

MAN Energy Solutions has been cooperating with DAMEN Naval for a long time. In the past, frigates and offshore patrol ships were built for the navies of the Netherlands, Mexico, Morocco and Indonesia. The Antarctic supply and research ship for Australia is also equipped with two MAN main propulsion diesel engines.

With MAN, another German company is now involved in the construction of the F126. DAMEN Naval had previously entered into supply agreements with Hensoldt, Renk and mtu-Rolls Royce. The German Thales naval competence centers in Kiel and Wilhelmshaven work for Thales Netherlands, which received the order for the delivery and complete integration of a command and weapon deployment system (FüWes) in November 2020.
