Damen Naval and ABB have signed a contract to supply onboard DC grid systems, transformers, generators, thruster motors, energy storage systems, including associated control systems and cybersecurity solutions for all four F126 frigates (plus two optional ships).

According to Damen, this lays the foundation for a modern system for the generation, distribution and use of electrical energy on board the F126 frigates. The direct current system enables the diesel generators of the frigates to be operated at variable speeds depending on the power output. The robustness of the DC network will enable the German Navy to use as few diesel generators as possible without causing power outages. This will significantly reduce the total running time and thus the fuel consumption of the power generation systems.

“The power requirements of naval vessels change in seconds, not minutes - from standby to high-speed maneuvers. This is where our Onboard DC Grid solution offers significant benefits, providing instant power on demand and excellent energy storage,” said Sindre Sætre, Business Line Manager, Coast Guard and Navy, ABB Marine & Ports.

The first F126 frigate is expected to be delivered to the German Navy in 2028.
