Germany and Norway are not only working closely together on the construction of the new U212CD submarine, but also on the procurement of new anti-ship missiles. On July 8, 2021, the Federal Office for Equipment, Information Technology and Use of the German Armed Forces and the Norwegian procurement agency Forsvarsmateriell agreed on this cooperation for the joint procurement of new Naval Strike Missile (NSM) Block 1A anti-ship missile systems. The Norwegian Kongsberg was commissioned to deliver the missiles developed jointly with MBDA for the German and Norwegian naval forces. Kongsberg gives the contract value at 425 million euros.

NSM is the latest generation of long-range precision missiles. With a stealth design and passive infrared image sensor, it is difficult to detect. It is optimized for the fight against sea targets in the shore and coastal environment with high threat or defensive potential. The high accuracy of the IR sensor helps to avoid collateral damage. The 407 kg multi-mission capable NSM has a speed of up to 0.95 mach and a standoff range of more than 100 nautical miles.
