Numerous classes of conventionally armed air-to-surface munitions (English:
Air-to-ground ammunition or AGM) are in use. Many are currently being modernized by retrofitting them with new technology. New, even more powerful tactical AGMs are being developed.
Precision missiles
While cruise missiles use a jet engine, conventionally powered precision rockets are usually equipped with a solid fuel propulsion. These missiles (known internationally as Precision Guided Missile or PGM) are smaller and less expensive than cruise missiles and are produced in significantly larger quantities. Most are short to medium range, although longer range configurations are being introduced. Unlike a cruise missile, they can be used not only by manned fixed-wing aircraft, but also by helicopters and UAVs.
