The Eurofighter on the way to full operational readiness
Peter Felsted
The Eurofighter Typhoon, which has now been in service for almost 20 years, is in the process of reaching full maturity as a combat aircraft. Most of its users in Europe have now joined the “F-35 Club”,but the Typhoon will continue to serve as an effective complement to the F-35 for many years to come.
The Eurofighter Typhoon - in Germany it is usually just referred to as Eurofighter - is the dominant European combat aircraft and was put into service by the four Eurofighter countries Germany, Italy, Spain and Great Britain from 2003.
The UK Royal Air Force (RAF) has 160 Typhoons but intends to phase out its older Tranche 1 aircraft by 2025, leaving the RAF with 107 Typhoons: 67 Tranche 2 and 40 Tranche 3 aircraft.
