At its meeting on Wednesday, the Budget Committee of the German Bundestag cleared the way for four procurement projects for the Bundeswehr. As the BMVg writes in a statement, guided missiles of the Evolved Seasparrow Missile (ESSM) type are to be procured for close-range air defense for the F124-class frigates and, in the future, also for the F126 and F123.

The procurement of the guided missiles that has now been approved covers the needs of the F124 frigate class for original equipment. The corresponding launch containers, transport containers and spare parts are also supplied. The procurement of the guided missiles for the F126 frigates and the full equipment of the F124 is planned in a second tranche from 2024.

After the approval of the budget committee, the BMVg will now issue a so-called "acceptance note". This corresponds to a preliminary agreement on the German share of this weapon system from the USA. The German side is to conclude contracts amounting to around 269 million euros for all aspects of procurement. German armaments companies are involved in this project.

New IT hardware

In addition, the BMVg procures new IT hardware. The Bundeswehr uses a uniform, digital command and control system to manage operations. To operate this system, standardized IT components that are hardened for use under difficult environmental conditions and can be used across the board are required for mobile and stationary use.

After the approval of the budget committee, the BMVg concludes two framework contracts for the procurement of hardened IT components worth up to around 348 million euros. The procurement of hardened communication servers including accessories is regulated in the first framework agreement. Among other things, up to 7,800 communication servers are to be purchased, as well as up to 600 computer systems, up to 5,900 power packs and up to 1,800 switches, as well as up to 800 displays and up to 800 keyboards that meet military standards.

The second framework agreement includes the purchase of hardened notebooks and tablets along with accessories. For example, up to 2,400 notebooks, up to 5,500 tablets and up to 1,200 displays and up to 3,500 DockLites, as well as up to 5,000 military-standard keyboards and up to 7,500 voltage converters.

New tractor units

Furthermore, on the basis of an existing framework agreement, the Ministry of Defense is procuring 57 semitrailer tractors in the 70-ton load class with a double cable winch for around 51 million euros to replace outdated semitrailer tractors.

As a fourth project, the Bundestag committee approved the procurement of vector data that is important for the geoinformation service of the Bundeswehr. With them, the armed forces are able to evaluate operationally relevant environmental influences, to position themselves precisely, to navigate and to act precisely on targets.

The BMVg therefore concluded a framework agreement for the production and delivery of vector data with a total volume of around 99 million euros. The basis for creating vector data is image data from satellites.
