Maritime Patrol Aircraft (MPA) make a significant contribution to long-distance reconnaissance at sea and to long-range anti-submarine defense from the air and thus remain indispensable for the German Navy. Therefore, following the parliamentary debate in June 2021, the Bundeswehr signed a contract for the procurement of five P-8A Poseidon aircraft from the American aircraft manufacturer Boeing.

D.he Federal Office for Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support of the German Armed Forces (BAAINBw) procures the aircraft using the US FMS process (Foreign Military Sales). The aircraft have been developed since 2004 on the basis of a comprehensively modified Boeing 737-800. They have successively replaced the US Navy's P-3C fleet since 2013. There are now more than 130 P-8A Poseidons in service worldwide.
