The Italian shipbuilding group Fincantieri officially began the construction of new submarines of the U212 NFS class on January 11th with a ceremony at its premises in La Spezia. The two submarines ordered for Italy's navy are scheduled to be delivered in 2027 and 2029 and will be equipped with a new command and weapon deployment system, innovative electrical mast systems, new integrated platform architectures and lithium batteries, as the European arms agency OCCAR writes in a statement. All systems would comply with the latest cybersecurity accreditation requirements.

OCCAR says it will manage the U212 NFS program, which also includes a new training center and an option for a second pair of submarines. Consistent with the OCCAR management framework, the U212 NFS program could include additional participating nations, including those that are not currently OCCAR member states, the agency writes.
