Finland has signed a contract worth $32 million (around €27 million) with BAE Systems to modernize its CV90 fleet. According to further information from BAE Systems, the mid-life upgrade will first be carried out on the prototypes and test vehicles and then on the remaining fleet vehicles from 2022 to 2026. BAE Systems Hägglunds, the original manufacturer of the CV90 infantry fighting vehicle, is working closely with Finnish industry to increase the reliability and maintainability of the weapon system.
The contract also provides for increased operational security and improvements to the software. In addition to Finland, the CV90 weapon system is also in use in Denmark, Estonia, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland and the Netherlands with almost 1,300 units in numerous variants. Finland is the fifth CV90 user nation to have commissioned the service life extension of its systems. Norway has already recently completed the mid-life upgrade of its fleet and has also ordered an additional 20 vehicles.
According to Colonel Rainer Peltoniemi, Inspector of the Finnish Infantry, the modernization program will ensure the vehicles' performance into the 2030s.
