On January 25th, the BAAINBw - apparently regardless of the current provisional budget management - concluded the development contract with ARGE NNbS for the air defense system for short and close range protection (LVS NNbS). The three partners in the ARGE informed about this in identical press releases. Accordingly, the order volume of 1.2 billion euros is broken down as follows: Rheinmetall 607 million euros, Diehl 339 million euros and Hensoldt 284 million euros. The budget committee of the German Bundestag released the necessary funds on January 17th (ESuTreported).

According to the ARGE, the core of the LVS NNbS development project is the optimization of medium-range air defense as well as the development of highly mobile anti-aircraft capabilities to protect deployed troops from threats from the air - even while moving.

The order that has now been placed is aimed at implementing the necessary solutions for networking individual components, integrating the IRIS T-SLM air defense system, establishing interoperability and expanding the interception area to a short range.

This networking makes it possible to connect the IRIS T-SLM fire units that are already being procured as well as the Skyranger 30 anti-aircraft gun tank that will be procured in the future.

Zu den Anteilen, die die Partner der ARGE in das Projekt einbringen, schreibt die ARGE:

“Rheinmetall, with its Electronic Solutions and Vehicle Systems divisions, brings technological know-how and many years of experience in the development and delivery of defense systems, particularly in the areas of vehicles, communication and integration.

Diehl Defense is a leading system house for air defense systems. In addition to systems for ground-based air defense, the company's product portfolio, which is headquartered in Überlingen, includes guided missiles for all branches of the armed forces, ammunition for the army, air force and navy, and protection systems.

As a supplier of national key technologies, Hensoldt brings in its expertise and field-tested products such as radars. This takes into account the comprehensive commonality of the products, for example within the framework of the product family concepts and especially in the areas of air traffic surveillance, classification and identification.

The submission to the budget committee showed that in the course of development an anti-aircraft missile tank and a fire control tank, a radar device and a weapons carrier for the medium range, a reloading vehicle each for the medium and close range, two command posts, a command vehicle, workshop equipment and a... Trainers should be built. The series-ready prototypes are expected to be delivered by 2028.
