The return to national and alliance defense brings numerous changes for the special forces of NATO and its allied states. This includes conceptual, operational and technical-tactical aspects.
S.Special forces – Special Operation Forces (SOF) – are operational and strategic high-value instruments. If the strategic framework changes, this affects concepts, the range of tasks and ultimately tactics and technology.
Special forces perform a variety of tasks. In the last few decades, most Western SOFs have seen themselves challenged primarily by Counter Terrorism (CT) and Counter Insurgency (COIN) operations in the Middle East and the Hindu Kush. Since the annexation of Crimea by the Russian Federation in spring 2014, however, there has been a return to national and alliance defense (LV/BV) at different speeds.
